Sometimes a sentence or passage in a book just speaks to me. I've kept track of the following quotes because they're laugh-out-loud funny, or poignant, or incredibly spot-on and/or insightful. I'll try to add to this list as I continue to find quotes I love.
"Fictional people are people, too, otherwise why would we care about what happens to them?"
~Lila Emerson in The Collector, by Nora Roberts
"From what I've seen, a girl's got to behave like a mental midget before she'll get any action in this town. If resisting that makes me a freak, so be it. I may die with my hymen intact, but at least I'll have my dignity"
~ Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty, by Jody Gehrman
"You're alive, Bianca. You still can't appreciate what it means, to be alive. It's better than being a vampire - better than anything else in the world. I remember a little of what being alive was like, and if I could touch that again, even for a day, it would be worth anything in the world. Even dying again, forever. All the centuries I've known and all the marvels I've seen don't compare to being alive."
~Evernight, by Claudia Gray
"It's our goddamed city! It's our goddamed country. No terrorist can take it from us for so long as we're free. Once we're not free, the terrorists win! Take it back! You're young enough and stupid enough not to know that you can't possibly win, so you're the only ones who can lead us to victory! Take it back!"
~Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow
"Ex-girlfriends are like car wrecks. You shouldn't want to know the details, but you do."
~Raven, by Allison van Diepen
"Nothing ever goes back to normal. All that happens is your concept of normal changes."
~Raven, by Allison van Diepen
"So here we sit on the island of misfit lovers. The broken, the maimed, the malformed, who still, all sensible evidence to the contrary, believe in love, crave love."
~Knit in Comfort, by Isabel Sharpe
"Sometimes, there aren't any good choices. Sometimes, making the right one is hard... It's funny, but when you think about it, we're all broken. That's what life does. It knocks you down and breaks you and you either get back up again, or you don't. You either do things on your terms, or you don't. You let the bad things win, or you don't. You either let it break you, or you don't."
~Every Other Day, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
"Maybe I should be a lawyer instead of a magical baker, Rose thought. Lawyers' mistakes rarely result in old men climbing on top of towers and taking off their pants."
~Bliss, by Kathryn Littlewood
"I decided to deflect her attitude by giving a long, Southern answer. I come from people who know how to draw things out. Annoy a Southerner, and we will drain away the moments of your life with our slow, detailed replies until you are nothing but a husk of your former self and that much closer to death."
~The Name of the Star, by Maureen Johnson
"We Deveauxs preferred to talk you to death, rather than face you in physical combat."
~The Name of the Star, by Maureen Johnson
"His divine spark lives within me, a presence that will never leave. And I am but one of many tools He has at His disposal. If I cannot act - if I refuse to act - that is a choice I am allowed to make. He has given me life, and all I must do to serve Him is to live. Fully and with my whole heart. With this knowledge comes a true understanding of all the gifts He has given me."
~Grave Mercy, by R.L. LaFevers
"Far more important than your actual ability is what those who follow you believe you can do."
~Wrapped, by Jennifer Bradbury
"When had his life turned into a porn version of a James Bond movie?"
~Circle of Danger, by Carla Swafford
"For the way loneliness is worse when you return to it after a reprieve - like the soul's version of putting on a wet bathing suit, clammy and miserable."
~Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Laini Taylor
"Was it good to treasure the memory of a few perfect hours together? Or would I have been better off never meeting him?"
~Dirty Little Secret, by Jennifer Echols
[Note: There's a lot going on in my offline life right now. All good things, but things that take time away from writing. I'll get back to regular book reviews this summer, though!]
